I am currently working as the Response to Intervention Coordinator. As the RTI Coordinator, I teach small groups of children in reading and math. I also analyze and monitor student data. I taught at John Sevier Elementary School prior to coming to Foothills in various grade levels. Teaching is something I truly love!

What is RTI?

RTI, or Response to Intervention, is a school process used to determine if a student is responding to classroom instruction and progressing as expected. In RTI, a student who is struggling receives additional instructional support through a multi-tiered instructional model. Our RTI model provides three levels of support. Each level, also known as a tier, offers instruction with increased intensity such as smaller groups or instructional time focused on specific areas.

What are the steps of RTI?

1. All students are screened using the STAR Reading, iReady Math assessments, and Fast Bridge assessments.

These are a quick assessment that measures a student’s skills expected for his/her grade level. This screening is conducted three times per year.

2. The results of the STAR Assessment help to identify students who are considered at-risk of not learning the necessary skills expected for the student’s age or grade level. Depending on the results of this initial screening, the school may use a secondary assessment, called Fast Bridge, to gather additional data about a student’s academic performance.
3. The school may then recommend that a student be provided additional instructional support to address the student’s areas of need.

Will parents be notified of the screening results?

The results of the benchmark assessments will be sent home. If the school recommends that a student receive additional instructional support beyond what is provided to all students in the class, the parent will be notified.

What happens if the school recommends that my child receive RTI services?

The RTI process begins with the child’s teacher utilizing alternate strategies and/or materials with the student and collecting data on a weekly basis to see if these changes are helpful. This is called Tier 1.

Tier 1 intervention will be provided for a minimum of four to six weeks. After this time period, the RTI Data Team will review the data collected to determine whether these changes are helpful.

If the team, which typically includes the RTI coordinator, the student’s teacher, and school principal, determines that the student is not progressing as expected while utilizing the above intervention strategies, they may recommend that your child receive Tier 2 intervention services.

What is Tier 2 Intervention?

Tier 2 intervention is in addition to the student’s regular classroom instruction and provided in a separate room. Tier 2 intervention means that a student is:

• taught in a small group for  20 minutes (K) or 30 minutes (first, second, and third grades) per day for reading intervention or
• taught in a small group for 20 minutes per day for math intervention
• taught using various instructional methods
• progress monitored regularly to see if the intervention is meeting his/her needs.

For students who are still not progressing with Tier 2 intervention, Tier 3 intervention may be provided.

What is Tier 3 intervention?

Instruction at this level is also provided in a small group setting outside of the classroom with regular progress monitoring. However, an additional program and extra time of intensive instruction are given.

What can I do to help my child?

You can help support your child’s progress in a number of ways. You can read to your child, have him/her read to you, review addition and subtraction concepts, practice basic math facts, and/or engage in other activities that promote positive growth in skills.

What if a student is not making progress even when provided with the most intense interventions at Tier 3?

There are students who do not make the expected progress and who may require further evaluation to determine other reasons for the lack of progress. Whenever there is a concern that the student might have a disability affecting her/her ability to progress, the school will seek the parent’s consent to conduct an individual evaluation to determine if the student needs special education services. The information gathered through the RTI process will be considered as part of this evaluation.

Qué es RTI?

RTI, o Respuesta a la Intervención, es un proceso de la escuela usado para determinar si un/-a alumno/-a responde a la instrucción en clase y si avanza como era de esperar.  En RTI, un alumno que batalla con la instrucción recibe apoyo instructivo adicional con un modelo multi-nivel de instrucción.  Nuestro modelo RTI ofrece tres niveles de apoyo.  Cada nivel, también llamado un “tier”, ofrece instrucción con una intensidad mayor, como grupos más pequeños o tiempo instructivo concentrado en áreas específicas.

Cuáles son los pasos de RTI?

1.   Todos los alumnos están examinados usando las Evaluaciones de Lectura y de Matemáticas STAR.  Esta es una evaluación rápida que mide las habilidades esperadas del alumno/-a para su nivel escolar.  Esta evaluación se lleva a cabo tres veces por año.

2.  Los resultados de la Evaluación STAR ayudan a identificar a los alumnos que están en riesgo de no aprender las habilidades necesarias esperadas a su edad o a su nivel escolar.  Dependiendo de los resultados de esta evaluación inicial, la escuela puede usar una evaluación secundaria, llamada DIBELS ( Indicaciones Dinámicas de Habilidades de Lectoescritura Básicas y Tempranas), para reunir datos adicionales sobre el rendimiento académico de un alumno.

3.  La escuela puede entonces recomendar que un/-a alumno/-a reciba apoyo instuctivo adicional para abordar las áreas de necesidad del alumno/-a.

Se informarán los padres de los resultados de la evaluación? 

Los resultados de la evaluación STAR se enviarán a casa.  Si la escuela recomienda que un alumno reciba apoyo instructivo adicional, más allá que lo que se da a todos los alumnos en la clase, se informarán los padres.

Qué sucederá si la escuela recomienda que mi hijo/-a reciba los servicios de RTI? 

El proceso de RTI empieza así:  el/la mastro/-a del niño/-a emplea estratégias y/o materiales alternativos con el/la alumno/-a y reune datos cada semana para ver si estos cambios ayudan.  Esto se llama “Tier 1” (Nivel 1).

La intervención del Nivel 1 se proporcionará durante un mínimo de cuatro a seis semanas.  Después de esta duración, el Equipo de Datos de RTI estudiará los datos reunidos para decidir si estos cambios son útiles.

Si el equipo, que incluye típicaments la coordinadora de RTI, el maestro/-a del alumno/-a y el/la director/-a de la escuela, decide que el/la alumno/-a no mejora como esperado mientras se emplean las estratégias de intervención (más arriba), tal vez ellos recomendarán que su hijo/-a reciba los servicios de intervención del Nivel 2 (“Tier 2”).

Qué es la Intervención del Nivel 2 (“Tier 2”)?

La intervención del Nivel 2 se añade a la instrucción habitual en clase y se proporciona en una aula separada.  La intervención del Nivel 2 quiere decir que:

-  el/la alumno/-a recibe instrucción en un grupo pequeño durante 20 minutos (K) o 30 minutos (primer, segundo y tercer grados) al día para intervención en lectura o

-  el/la alumno/-a recibe instrucción en un grupo pequeño durante 20 minutos al día para intervención en matemáticas

-  el/la alumno/-a recibe instrucción usando métodos instructivos diversos

-  los progresos del alumno/-a se siguen a menudo para ver si la intervención satisface sus necesidades.

Para los alumnos que siguen sin avanzar con la intervención del nivel 2,  se puede proporcionar la intervención del Nivel 3 (“Tier 3”).

Qué es la Intervención del Nivel 3 (“Tier 3”)?

La instrucción a este nivel también se proporciona en un grupo pequeño fuera de la aula con seguimiento  frecuente de su progreso.  Sin embargo, un programa adicional y treinta minutos más (una hora en total) de instrucción intensiva se dan.

Qué puedo hacer para ayudar a mi hijo/-a?

Usted puede apoyar el progreso de su hijo/-a de varias maneras.  Usted puede leerle a su hijo/-a, hacerle leerle a Ud., repasar los conceptos de adición y sustracción, practicar las operaciones básicas matemáticas, y/o tomar parte en otras actividades que estimulan el desarrollo positivo en sus habilidades.

Qué sucede si el/la alumno/-a no hace progreso aún cuando recibe las intervenciones más intensivas al Nivel 3 (“Tier 3”)?

Hay alumnos que no hacen los progresos esperados y que pueden necesitar evaluación adicional para determinar otras razones para la falta de progreso.   Siempre que hay una preocupación que el/la alumno/-a tenga una discapacidad que afecta su capacidad de avanzar, la escuela pedirá el consentimiento de los padres para llevar a cabo una evaluación individual para determinar si el/la alumno/-a necesita los servicios de la educación especial.  La información que se reune durante el proceso de RTI se considerará como parte de esta evaluación.
